Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible

Hello YMS Parents,

We’ve had a fantastic start to the school year! At YMS, we are fortunate to have a dedicated team of adults who are committed to helping your child succeed. I continue to be amazed by our staff’s dedication and the supportive environment they create. This truly is a great district, and I believe we have the best middle school in the state!

Students have been busy both in and out of the classroom. I see them creating, collaborating, and thinking critically every day. Many are also involved in activities such as FFA, Teammates, Student Senate, Band, Choir, Cross Country, Volleyball, and Football—just to name a few. Please continue to encourage your child to get involved. Students who participate in activities feel more connected to school, which has a positive impact on their learning.

Our ICU system is off to a strong start, and we’re seeing great results. The heart of ICU is shifting the focus from simply grading homework to ensuring real learning. You may notice fewer grades in the grade book—this is intentional. Teachers are focusing on measuring your child’s understanding of the standards. At YMS, every teacher has a restudy/retake policy, so if students want to improve an assessment score, they have the opportunity. Each teacher may handle this a bit differently, so feel free to reach out to them with any questions.

ICU Guidelines at YMS:
  • ICU gives students extra time and help, holding all students accountable to complete quality work.
  • ICU builds a culture of learning, with teachers taking responsibility for student growth and students re-engaging with their learning.
  • ICU teaches responsibility by not allowing zeros or unfinished work to stand in place of learning.

Thank you for supporting this process and partnering with us to give your child the best education possible.

Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on:
  • September 30  & October 7 from 4:30–8:30 p.m.
  • October 9 from 8:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 1:00–3:00 p.m.

These are scheduled conferences. Be watching for a message with a link to sign up for your time slot. Please only sign up for one session, as we do not have enough openings for every family to meet with all core teachers.

Finally, thank you for helping your student balance academics with rest, nutrition, and encouragement. With your support, we can make their middle school years some of the best of their lives.

Go Dukes!

York Middle School Families,

Here is what our school is working on this month from our CharacterStrong curriculum. To start the year, we have introduced Character Strong, established community agreements and built connections with one another. During the Character Strong lessons that occur on Tuesdays during Family time, staff and students are finding time to connect, engage in kindness, and lead with empathy and curiosity.

The following is an overview of what our Families will be learning about this month:

  • Building a positive school culture
  • Understanding bullying
  • Advocating for one another
  • Defining respect
  • Increasing a sense of belonging for everyone in our school community
  • Character Dares: These are the challenges that put into practice what students are learning in Character Strong lessons

Just a reminder that our school’s designated CharacterStrong time happens on Tuesdays during Family. Your continued support from home makes all the difference as we encourage students to practice the skills they are learning both in and outside of the classroom. Try asking your students about 1 thing they learned or 1 new idea they heard this week during their CharacterStrong lesson.

As always, if you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to reach out to me or watch the CS video
to learn more.

With deep kindness,
Jennifer Badura

Weather Related Emergency/School Closing Procedures

In case of a weather emergency, we will follow the same procedure that has been in practice in the past years.

That procedure is as follows:

1. Radio Station KOOL (103.5 FM 1370 AM), and KTMX-FM (104.9) will again serve as our primary source for dispensing “school closing information.” They are 24 hour stations.
2. If severe weather necessitates an early dismissal, a school cancellation, or information concerning school buses, it will be broadcast on KOOL and KTMX.
3. Bus drivers are instructed to use good judgment in determining whether a road is passable. The Transportation Department will notify parents where children can be loaded if a specific road cannot be traveled. Buses will travel the regular routes and maintain a time schedule consistent with the conditions of the roads.
4. “Emergency Messages” will be sent to our student’s parents and guardians who have an email or cell phone number listed in Infinite Campus, and the YPS Staff. Information will be posted on our website at www.yorkpublic.org, on our Facebook page at York Public Schools.
Parents and Guardians – please be sure to provide the school secretaries with your current email address and cell phone number in order to be notified!!

FILE: EBBDA POLICY ON SCHOOL DISMISSAL FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER
The York Public Schools will be closed, when in the determination of the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, the weather conditions constitute a hazard for students going to or from school. When regular morning school bus routes cannot be run due to road conditions, yet travel in town is not seriously hampered, school may remain open. When possible a "limited service" bus route shall be run anytime school remains open and it is not possible to run regular routes. The starting time of the morning session may be delayed when necessary. When, during the school day and while school is in session, it is necessary to send bus pupils home early, school may be dismissed for all students.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURES ON SCHOOL DISMISSAL FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER

When school is not held or is dismissed early due to poor weather conditions, notification will be placed on the York radio station and any other such means as the superintendent may deem necessary and feasible.

When it is necessary to dismiss school due to inclement weather after the school day has started, all students should be accounted for in their homeroom by their homeroom teachers. Bus students should be dismissed first. Teachers shall be responsible for their assigned students. Before dismissing elementary town students, the teachers shall not let any student who has been transported to school go home without contacting their parents, unless they are sure other arrangements have been made. Students who have walked to school may be allowed to walk home if the teacher feels the weather does not present a hazard. Teachers will be dismissed when all of their students have been accounted for.
